Mbombela Local Municipality is situated in the Lowveld region of Mpumalanga, in the north-eastern part of South Africa. Mbombela is a Siswati term meaning ‘a lot of people together in a small space’, and fittingly describes several areas within the municipality.

Transport sector
The Maputo Development Corridor, linking Johannesburg to Maputo, runs through Mbombela.

Trading sector
Trading mainly occurs in Nelspruit’s CBD, White River, Hazyview and Kanyamazane.

Agricultural sector
Commercial and subsistence farming in the subtropical climate of Mbombela facilitates the production of a wide variety of crops, namely mangoes, avocados and litchies.

Mining sector
There are extensive linkages between mining, electricity and manufacturing.

Manufacturing sector
Furniture, metal, manganese and paper and pulp manufacturers dominate in Mbombela.

Financial sector
Mbombela has a well-established banking and financial sector, which is the second-largest contributor after the manufacturing sector.
