Project Bravo gets environmental OK from government

Two appeals lodged against the construction of Project Bravo, Eskom’s new coal-fired power station in Witbank, have been dismissed by Environmental Affairs and Tourism Minister Marthinus van Scalkwyk, meaning that the project has the environmental green light to proceed.

The 5 400MW power station is part of Eskom’s plans to boost electricity generation capacity and will help avert future power crises such as the country is currently experiencing.

The appeals lodged against the project has to do with the impact of the ash dump, the quality of air close to a nearby poultry farm and the impact on water quality. However, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism says that the plant will be fitted with advanced air pollution abatement which will result in a minimum of 90% of sulphur dioxide being removed from emissions. The equipment will also reduce dust emissions from the power stations, bringing it in line with international emission standards.
